Raberto Schools to Benefit from Africare Basketball Initiative

Ten secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja are to benefit from the second phase of basketball skills acquisition programme called Power Forward. The partnership is jointly promoted by Africare, NBA and ExxonMobil.

The schools taking part in the programme are Government Secondary School, Wuse Zone 3, Rahinna Model School, Jikwoyi, Divine Mercy Secondary School, Asokoro, Raberto School, Wuse 2, Bicardos Schools, Kubwa, Glisten International Academy, Jahi, GSS, Karu, GSS, Airport and GSS Garki.

The maiden edition of Power Forward was elaborately launched in Abuja in 2013 and had Nigeria's basketball legend, Hakeem Olajuwon, former NBA star Obinna Ekezie and American female basketball professional, Swin Cash, as some of the stars that gave mentorship to the many students that attended the two -day session.fear that without insurance cover by NAIC, the fund may be diverted for other purpose instead of agriculture.

The Country Director for Nigeria, Africare , Dr Orode Doherty, at the consultative stakeholders forum with school principals and coaches, held yesterday to move the programme further, thanked the school authorities for giving their hearts and souls to the progamme.

She described the inaugural edition as a huge success, adding that the company was encouraged by the support and confidence reposed in them by school heads to impact life skills to students through basketball engagement.

"The initial year was a success and it was made possible because of the passion of teachers and coaches for children. In the coming years, we will spend more time ensuring that all the contents are applicable," Doherty said.

Two development coaches, Glory Omiunu of Nigeria Customs and Geoffrey Bottson of GSS Zone 3 Power Forward, were presented with ball gifts as coaches of the year for the first year of the Power Forward Program.

The President of Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Tijani Umar, lauded the Power Forward initiative by Africare. Umar described the programme as energetic stressing that it gives value to the efforts of NBBF to develop the game at the grassroots.
